INCOME

For many rural families, income is limited, seasonal, and unpredictable. Without reliable earnings, even basic needs—food, healthcare, education—can remain out of reach.
Rooted In Hope works alongside communities to create sustainable income opportunities. By investing in small-scale enterprises and community-led solutions, we help families generate reliable income and build pathways toward long-term stability.
Our Approach
We focus on solutions that are simple, scalable, and rooted in local context.
-
Community-led – Designed with local partners and tailored to each region
-
Accessible – Low-cost models that families can adopt and sustain
-
Multiplying impact – Skills and resources that can be shared within communities
We prioritize working with women and rural families, recognizing their central role in strengthening households and driving community-wide change

FEATURED PROJECT
Chickenomics
Small investments can create lasting change.
Our Chickenomics program provides families with chickens, training, and support to raise poultry for both nutrition and income. With a reliable source of eggs and livestock, families can improve their diets while saving money and earning income through local markets.
In Guatemala and Kenya, Chickenomics is often implemented alongside water and food security programs—helping families address multiple challenges at once.
The results are immediate and lasting:
-
Eggs provide daily nutrition for children and families
-
Surplus eggs and chickens create a steady source of income
-
Families reinvest earnings into their homes, farms, and futures
For Maria in Guatemala, the income she earned from her chickens made it possible to purchase a new roof for her home—an investment that transformed her family’s living conditions. In the same village, Mercedes was able to invest in her son’s epilepsy medication and Martha was able to purchase school supplies. Juana invested the money from her chickens into basket-making materials and has now started a small business selling those for additional income.
Women are at the center of this work, using income from poultry to support their families, invest in small businesses, and build greater financial independence.

Women’s Beekeeping Collective
(Kenya)
In rural Kenya, Rooted In Hope supported a group of women with the tools and training needed to start a honey harvesting business.
With access to beehives and equipment, Miriam launched a beekeeping microenterprise and began producing honey for sale. She has since trained other women in her community—expanding the impact of the program.
Together, these women have doubled their household income, creating new opportunities for their families while strengthening local economies.
Empowering Rural Women’s Groups
Across our programs, women’s groups play a vital role in driving economic opportunity. Rooted In Hope works in partnership with these groups to generate income opportunities, through activities such as:
-
Raising seedlings for reforestation projects
-
Assembling drip irrigation systems
-
Growing and selling surplus crops
These activities create both income and cost savings, allowing families to meet daily needs while building financial stability.
In El Salvador, one family used income from surplus crops to purchase a water pump—eliminating the need to walk long distances for water and freeing up time for other productive activities.
