FEATURED PROJECT
Sister-School Program
Connecting students across continents
Our Sister School program brings together students from the United States and Africa to learn from one another through shared experiences, conversations, and collaboration.
Over 500 students have participated, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the environment. Through letters, projects, photos, and virtual exchanges, students share their daily lives, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. Schools have supported one another through fundraisers and joint conservation efforts across the globe.
“I can’t believe you walk five miles to school. It’s really truly amazing what you can do.

Learning by Doing
Conservation & Sustainability Education
Our team and volunteers lead lessons, activities, and discussions focused on environmental stewardship. Students don’t just learn about sustainability, they practice it.
Programs include:
-
Tree planting and reforestation
-
Kitchen garden initiatives
-
Water conservation and drip irrigation
-
Local ecosystem restoration projects
These experiences help students build practical skills while understanding the long-term impact of environmental responsibility.
Expanding Access to Education
We invest in the spaces and systems that make education possible.
At many of our partner schools, we have established kitchen gardens and water harvesting systems to improve access to water and healthy nutrition for students.
At the Baraka Children’s Centre in Nyeri, Kenya, we are supporting the construction of a Library and STEM Resource Center designed to serve over 250 students. This facility will provide dedicated space for learning, access to resources, and new opportunities in science and technology.
In Ghana, we partnered with the Godfred’s Foundation to support the growth of the Semanyiya American School, which has expanded to serve nearly 500 students. Our work has included water storage systems and agricultural initiatives that improve food security and student well-being.

Mobilizing the Next Generation
Student Volunteers & Environmental Impact
Our work is powered not only by the students we serve, but also by the students who show up to help.
To date, over 900 student volunteers from institutions including Outspan Medical College, Goat Shepherd University, and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology have supported our reforestation efforts in and around Aberdare National Park. In Bhutan, the students from Punakha Central High School participated in a tree planting ceremony and learned how to properly plant and care for fruit tree seedlings.
These students play a direct role in land restoration and conservation work, gaining hands-on experience while helping protect important ecosystems.
Local Impact in the U.S.
We also partner with schools and communities in the United States to bring environmental education closer to home.
Rooted In Hope has worked with schools across California, Nevada, and Oregon on projects that promote conservation and stewardship of our natural resources.
In the Lake Tahoe region, students participate in hands-on projects like trail restoration to prevent erosion and protect water clarity. In southern Oregon, we work with Ruch Outdoor Community School on initiatives including riparian restoration, acorn collection, and oak tree reforestation.
These programs reinforce the same core principle: meaningful change starts with local action.

Shaping the Future
Students across our programs come from different backgrounds and live very different lives, but they share similar dreams.
Many aspire to become doctors, engineers, pilots, and leaders in their communities. By connecting them across cultures and grounding their education in real-world impact, we help them see what’s possible and give them the tools to pursue it.
